Husband of British woman held in Rwanda tells of welfare fears as he reveals she is pregnant

The husband of a British woman being held in a Rwandan jail has revealed she is five months pregnant as it emerged she is facing charges of “revealing state secrets” and recruiting a secret army. Faustin Rukundo, a laboratory worker from Leeds, dismissed the allegations against his wife Violette Uwamahoro as “ridiculous” and said he was gravely concerned for her welfare after the Rwandan authorities demanded a further month of detention to investigate her.

Incommunicado

The mother-of-two is due in court on Monday after she was held incommunicado for a fortnight last month following her arrest while she was in her native Rwanda to attend her father’s funeral. The i has been told that Mrs Uwamahoro, 39, who has British nationality after arriving in Britain in 2004, is now facing three criminal charges, including plotting to form “an irregular armed group” and revealing state secrets.
