The husband of a British woman being held in a Rwandan jail has revealed she is five months pregnant as it emerged she is facing charges of “revealing state secrets” and recruiting a secret army. Faustin Rukundo, a laboratory worker from Leeds, dismissed the allegations against his wife Violette Uwamahoro as “ridiculous” and said he was gravely concerned for her welfare after the Rwandan authorities demanded a further month of detention to investigate her.

The mother-of-two is due in court on Monday after she was held incommunicado for a fortnight last month following her arrest while she was in her native Rwanda to attend her father’s funeral.
