Rwanda arrests John Museminali, husband to former Foreign Affairs minister Rosemary Museminali

Rwanda security agencies on Wednesday arrested John Museminali, husband of former Rwanda Foreign Affairs Minister Rosemary Museminali, together with two other people in connection with attempted escape of Col Tom Byabagamba the former head of the Presidential Guard from jail.

Rosemary is currently United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAID)S Director for External and Donor Relations. Museminali’s phones and laptops were also confiscated by Security from his home.

Security also arrested the sister of Mary Baine, the wife to incarcerated Col Tom Byabagamba, called Florence.

Sources in Rwanda confirmed that Florence was released on Wednesday but on Thursday, his husband Lt Col Innocent Nsengiyumva was arrested and taken to an unknown destination.

They also arrested Emmanuel Mukimbiri a Rwandese businessman of British citizenship who fled Rwanda to the UK in the 1980s and a close friend to Museminali.

Prior to being appointed Director for External and Donor Relations UNAIDS, Museminali was the UNAIDS Representative at the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from 2011 until 2018.

She served her country as the Rwandan Minister of State for International Cooperation and later the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 2005 until 2009.

She served as the Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Scandinavian countries from 2000 to 2005. From 1994 until 1999, she was the Rwanda Red Cross Secretary-General and Director for Social Services.
