Free Paul Rusesabagina
In today’s press briefing at the EU, Peter Stano, lead EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (@ExtSpoxEU) suggested that sanctions against Rwanda may be called for in response to their repression against human rights defenders like Paul Rusesabagina and others. It is FANTASTIC to see the world community finally accepting what is happening in Rwanda and starting to act! From the press briefing:
“[What happened to Rusesabagina] is not restricted to one individual. This is unfortunately something we’re seeing done repeatedly by the regime… We’re doing what we can. In the context of our relations between the EU and Belarus for example we adopted a number of sanctions and penalties for human rights breaches as a result of the ongoing oppression carried out by the regime. So we’re continuing to assess the situation, and member states are prepared to take measures where necessary.”
“We’re still following developments in the country and the ongoing repression against human rights defenders, against members of the political opposition and against the media as well. And we will continue to react in the way we see most fit in the form of sanctions. So we are continuing sanctions and our assessment of the situation and if necessary we will take the necessary and appropriate steps.”
