Dr Dre: The first ‘hip-hop billionaire’?

That is the boast made by singer-songwriter Tyrese Gibson in a video posted on Facebook (and later removed), before he is pushed aside by Dr Dre, the co-founder of the Beats Electronics firm. Dre, who initially made his name in hip-hop through his affiliation with N.W.A and his beats for sale for artists such as Tupac and Snoop Dogg in the West Coasts hip hop scene, has profited hugely from his Beats company.

The list of the richest people on the planet, says Dre, the 49-year-old hip-hop star and entrepreneur, has changed “in a big way”.
