Burundi calls for its immediate withdrawal from the agenda of the Security Council

Speaking by videoconference at the 75th United Nations General Assembly, this Thursday, September 24, President Ndayishimiye denounced “muscle diplomacy” and called for cooperation beneficial for all states.

”  We therefore reiterate our legitimate call for Burundi’s immediate withdrawal from the Security Council’s agenda, and to use this precious time to deal with socio-economic development and to support national efforts in the implementation of the national plan of development of Burundi 2018-2027 and the sustainable development goals of the 2030 agenda , ”said Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of Burundi.

For him, the fact that he is on this agenda constitutes a factor of destabilization of the country instead of promoting peace and tranquility. ” Burundi is arbitrarily on the agenda of the Security Council for political reasons and the selfish interests of certain powers, which have nothing to do with the well-being of the Burundian people, which in no way constitutes a threat to international peace and security ”.

“Mutually beneficial and respectful cooperation”

At the diplomatic level, the Burundian head of state wants muscle diplomacy to give way to mutually beneficial and respectful cooperation. He speaks of ” the tendency of certain states which use both subtle and illegal means to regulate geopolitics in the countries of the South and to replace the international community to oppress other countries by imposing unilateral coercive measures on them in violation. of the principles of the United Nations Charter must cease ”.

President Ndayishimiye said that Burundi remains open to countries and international organizations that wish to forge mutually beneficial and respectful cooperation relations.  “My country reaffirms its commitment to play its part, its full share, in the construction of a world order based on the rule of law, a peaceful, equitable and prosperous world and respectful of the principles of the United Nations Charter”.
