Following the ejection of army representative Gen. David Sejusa from Parliament, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have declared that the former spy chief has lost his job in the army.
General David Sejusa
Army spokesman Paddy Ankunda told Sunday Vision that the removal of Sejusa from Parliament means he has ceased being the co-ordinator of intelligence services and holding any other post in the force.
Ankunda added that the Commander-in-chief of UPDF, President Yoweri Museveni, will soon pronounce himself on Sejusa.
He added that the army is waiting for clearance from the Electoral Commission (EC) to kick-start the process of filling the vacant seat.
“As soon as EC clears us, President Museveni will appoint the officer to replace Gen. Sejusa,” he said. “After the appointment; the defence force’s council will approve the officer,” he said.
For the army officer to be appointed am MP, one must have the required qualifications for an MP, including the minimum Uganda Certificate of Education UEB certificate.
Early this week, Parliament adopted a report of the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline that recommended the removal of Sejjusa from Parliament after he was found guilty of being absent without permission.
The report noted that the former spy chief flouted Article 83(1) of the Constitution and Rule 101(6) of the parliamentary rules of procedure.
After an MP is kicked out of Parliament, the law requires the Speaker of Parliament to write to EC to prepare fresh elections to fill the seat.
Parliamentary spokesperson, Helen Kawesa, Friday said within the next few days, Parliament would write to EC to ask for Sejusa’s replacement.
