The State Minister of Justice told the Catholic Bishop of Byumba to shut up on family issues because the Bishop is celibate. ” You [ a celibate Bishop] have no knowledge about family life because you do not have a family [ you are unmarried] “, the State Minister of Justice was quoted by a local newspaper. Bishop Servien Nzamwita had called on the government of Rwanda to pay more attention to the challenges an ordinary family faces in Rwanda.
The Bishop had cited family based conflicts, violence and poverty, among other critical issues that could ruin families in Rwanda. Although the President of the Senate later defended the Bishop’s right to personal opinion, it was too little, too late to save the Catholic Bishop of Byumba from ridicule and humiliation.
