Kagame, Tanzania Quietly Became Middle-Income

By David Himbara

The GNI per capita income rates for 2018 have been announced by the World Bank. Rwanda’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is US$780. Tanzania’s GNI per capita is US$1,020. In other words, Tanzania just entered the bracket of middle-income countries with a GNI per capita between US$1,006 and US$3,955 per World Bank 2018 classification.

Unlike General Kagame who has been shouting on the rooftops about his economic achievements, Tanzania said nothing about its advancement. Tanzania joins Kenya as two East Africa Community member states that are middle-income. Congratulations to Tanzania — may it quicken the pace of improving lives.
