We have something funny. Kagame goes around boasting that he has built an economic lion. Kagame cites the World Bank Doing Business indicators as evidence.
Here is why it is not wise to loudly cite Doing Business as evidence of economic performance.
First, take a look at the 2017 Doing Business Rankings. Rwanda tops East Africa as follows:
56 – Rwanda
92 – Kenya
115 – Uganda
132 – Tanzania
But now, let us look at actual foreign direct investment into East Africa in 2015:
US$1.9 billion – Tanzania
US$1.4 billion – Kenya
US$1.0 billion – Uganda
US$323 million – Rwanda
Kagame’s Rwanda, which is the best ranked in ease of Doing Business, attracted the least investment of US$323 million.
Tanzania which is the worst ranked in ease of Doing Business attracted nearly US$2billion in foreign investment.
So Kagame, easy on the noise please. Let the Tanzanians make the loudest noise in East Africa. They have reason to – you don’t, chief.
