One prisoner was reportedly killed last night in a fight that ensued in a Moroto Government Prison cell where Forum for Democratic Change former Presidential Candidate Col Kizza Besigye is being held.

Besigye was yesterday evening remanded to the prison by the Moroto Chief Magistrate’s Court after he was charged with Treason.

The opposition politician revealed today that a gruesome brawl broke out amongst the inmates who were excited to see him, and it ended tragically with one of them being beaten to death.

Besigye was today speaking to a Nation Media journalist who was allowed exclusive access to the prison with no recoding gadgets.

Besigye told the reporter that the prison is extremely crowded with about 170 inmates and that its conditions are appalling.

Meanwhile Dr Besigye who in the past weeks has been on a collision course with government over last February’s elections was also charged with Terrorism on top of Treason.

Authorities he said, told him that during the clump down on his steered ‘defiance campaign,’ they found weapons at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, notably machetes, which they believe were to be used to cause bloodshed in Kampala.

Besigye declined to give a response to the charges in the absence of his lawyers who were reportedly denied access.

He is expected to reappear before Moroto Chief Magistrate Charles Yepeise on May 25 for further hearing of the case.
