Rwanda: Kabuga extracted from his cell “for medical reasons”. A source close to the matter told AFP that Mr. Kabuga, who says he is 87 years old, was to be taken out of his cell in La Santé prison this weekend “for medical reasons”.
According to another close source, Mr. Kabuga was hospitalized in Paris on Friday for an “intestinal obstruction”. Asked by AFP, his lawyer Me Emmanuel Altit did not wish to comment on the information.
The Court of Cassation will rule on September 30 on the surrender to international justice of Félicien Kabuga, arrested in May near Paris after twenty-five years on the run.
The highest court of the judiciary was seized by the Rwandan after the green light given on June 3 by the Paris Court of Appeal to its handing over to the Mechanism for International Tribunals (MTPI), the structure responsible for completing the work of the International Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
His lawyers regularly cite the deemed poor health of Mr. Kabuga, who suffers from diabetes and hypertension, but also “leukoaraiosis,” an incurable condition that causes him to gradually lose his motor and cognitive functions.
If the Court of Cassation rules for the handing over of Mr. Kabuga to the MTPI, France will have one month to execute the decision.
