Rwanda: Paul Rusesabagina deprived of his lawyers at the opening of his trial

The political opponent, arrested last August, is accused of terrorism and other serious crimes. He appeared before the Kigali court without his lawyers.

Paul Rusesabagina, whose actions during the genocide inspired the film “Hotel Rwanda”, has been facing justice in his country since Monday. A trial that opened without its official representatives.

“We hope to be able to go there on the 18th (of September), explained his lawyer, Vincent Lurquin. But, you know, to go to Rwanda, there are a lot of procedures, especially for visas. We therefore hope that the Rwandan government will accept that we have visas in order to be able to defend Mr. Rusesabagina there. But I must tell you that the talks between the Belgian and Rwandan authorities on this front are not making much progress. ”_

His lawyers reject the terrorism charges and protest against the treatment of their client: “The conditions of his detention are very hard for him and for his health. But apart from that, he cannot talk about anything else because he is never alone, even when he speaks with his family on the phone ”continued Master Lurquin.

His relatives assure that the accusations are motivated only by his political positions. According to them, Paul Rusesabagina was even kidnapped by the authorities while he was in Dubai before being forcibly brought back to Rwanda.
