New details have emerged about the assassination of Louis Baziga the Rwanda diaspora association in Mozambique. Baziga also a top member of Rwanda’s deadly directorate of military intelligence was yesterday shot three times by gunmen traveling on motorcycle a hallmark of the elusive Rwandan military agents operating in the southern African countries.
He was gunned down in Maputo in a broad day light using a silencer pistol while traveling in his TX Prado registration number AIH 830 MC .
Close confidants have since Baziga’s assassination to the current power struggle and supremacy between DMI operatives operating in Maputo in order to control operational funds sent from Kigali.
Litany
It should be remembered that in June 2019, Rwanda government opened an embassy in Maputo, Mozambique and security in Southern Africa issued warnings to Rwandese most especially the opposition to keep a watch after the appointment of Claude Nikobisanzwe as an ambassador of the new embassy.
This was because Nikobisanzwe a well-known National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) operative was expelled by the South African authority for subversive activities and a failed assassination attempts on the life of Gen Kayumba Nyamwasa a Rwandan freedom fighter and former war veteran who participated in the ushering of President Kagame into power.
Critics saw the appointment of Nikobisanzwe as intelligence led appointment rather than diplomatic related appointment.
It should further be remembered that during the opening of the new embassy in Mozambique, Rwanda’s ailing Foreign Minister Dr Richard Sezibera was the chief guest while Baziga was among the organizers of the event.
Sezibera has since been poisoned while on an official trip to Europe and is currently fighting for his life at a hospital in India.
Baziga
Sources say prior to the opening of the mission, Baziga was the main point of contact for the regime in Mozambique.
“He was more of a consular than chairman of Rwanda diaspora community in Mozambique. He was always in charge of receiving Rwanda government officials and intelligence officials visiting Mozambique, he was a trusted figure within the system”.
However, with Nikobisanzwe assuming the official government representative in Maputo, Baziga’s role was nipped from the bud as the latter wanted to take charge and be on top of everything.
“After arriving in Maputo, Nikobisanzwe wanted to build a new Rwanda diaspora team in Mozambique which would be answerable to him, a move which faced resistance from Baziga, refusing to be replaced as the Rwanda diaspora association boss. He failed to realize that he has become an excess within the system”.
Nikobisanzwe last month reportedly started using his new network which is composed of one Philbert Ndekwe and Jean Pierre Kimonyo to undermine Baziga authority within Rwanda diaspora association in Mozambique.
“For the last 3 months, several communications have been sent to DMI in Kigali, Rwanda, reporting Baziga with all kinds of accusations including having friends who are members of the opposition and most of his family members in SADEC countries being in opposition. With cooked up stories from Didier Rutembesa a well-known DMI operative who was also expelled from South Africa for subversive activities, but now stationed in Mozambique and reports from Nikobisanzwe put Baziga’s life into jeopardy”.
Source say, Lt Col Francis Gakwerere is a well DMI agent who was recently in Maputo could have planned Baziga’s assassination.
Col Gakwerere is a member of the team comprising Gen James Kabarebe, Gen Jack Nziza and James Musoni.
In 2010, Lt Col Gakwerere fled in from South Africa after being granted bail in the assassination case against Gen Kayumba Nyamwasa.
He currently elusive and travels using Guinea Conakry and Malian passports.
For his survival doctrine, Rwandan president Paul Kagame has turned Rwandan Embassies all over the world as centers of staging for espionage, kidnapping and assassinations of those seen as non-sympathizers of his regime in Kigali.
Last week, ABC news aired a story in which it reported that Rwandan intelligence officers had invaded Australia to eliminate Rwandan refugees.
ABC uncovered allegations of a complex web of Rwandan spies living within the suburbs, creating a culture of fear among the refugees who had escaped Rwanda in pursuit of a safer life.
One of those targeted Mubarak told ABC news that Rwandan Embassy in Johannesburg tried to recruit him as a spy, asking him to join a broader network in Europe tasked with tracking down opponents of the Rwandan regime.
But after discovering a government plot to assassinate his friend, he rejected the offer, turned state’s witness and testified against Rwanda’s authorities.
His evidence led to the conviction of four men.
