Rwanda’s President Kagame is a despot in disguise, says critic facing jail

The threat of a 22-year jail sentence has failed to silence Rwanda’s most outspoken dissident, who is adamant that President Kagame, the West’s favourite African leader, has duped the world.

The country’s immaculate villages, fibre-optic networks and technocratic cabinet have drawn comparisons with Singapore, and brought in millions in aid. Yet Diane Rwigara insists that it is a façade masking a dictatorship.

“The only people enjoying Rwanda’s ‘stability’ are tourists, diplomats and foreigners,” said Ms Rwigara, who last week went on trial for forgery and inciting insurrection, charges she says are motivated by her challenge to Mr Kagame at last year’s elections. FULL STORY
