PRETORIA – The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has broken its silence on South Africa’s diplomatic spat with Rwanda.
In a statement released on Saturday, the department says four diplomats from Rwanda and one from Burundi were expelled for violating their status.
The department says investigations show direct links between the diplomats and the murder of former Rwanda Intelligence Chief, Colonel Patrick Karegyeya, and attacks on former Rwanda Army General Kayumba Nyamwasa.
The diplomats are accused of violating Article 41 of the Vienna Convention and South Africa’s Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act.
The statement describes Rwanda’s expulsion of all South African diplomats, apart from the ambassador, as disproportionate.
South Africa says it will continue to act against those who abuse their diplomatic immunities.
