Ancient Roman leaders famously controlled and pacified the populace by providing “panem et circenses” meaning “bread and circuses”. Beside subduing and blinding the populace, these leaders exhibit breath-taking structure (Colosseums) conveying the wealth, and power of Rome.
Those circuses/games, were more than just entertainment, these leaders mostly relied on them as populist tools used to drum up political support while glorifying themselves. Remember #Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and his lavishly lifestyle after he murdered his mother!
