Rwanda has made international headlines for having the highest proportion of female members of parliament in the world, yet the country’s female sex workers still suffer from constant mistreatment and live in fear. Gravel crunches under my feet as I make my way to Chantal’s* house. It’s in a typical Rwandan slum compound of five or so houses. A deep trench divides the houses from the road with a small make-shift bridge made from wooden planks used for crossing.
