Uganda: Obasanjo Says Commonwealth Team Wouldn’t Endorse Fraudulent Uganda Election Results

Should Uganda’s dictator of 30 years Gen. Yoweri Museveni declare himself the victor in the Ugandan election marred with accusations of pre-ticked ballots in favor of the incumbent and hours of delay at polling stations across the East African nation to suppress voter turnout it’s unclear how the public and the international community will act.

The head of the Commonwealth Observer Team, retired Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo has indicated his group wouldn’t endorse fraudulent results.

The country’s Electoral Commission, including its chairman Badru Kiggundu, is hand-picked by Gen. Museveni. Official results aren’t due until Saturday.

As of 7:45 PM U.S. Eastern Time, with results from only 580 polling stations out of a total of 28,010 Gen. Museveni had 63% of the vote to front-running challenger Dr. Kizza Besigye’s 32% and 1. 2% for former prime minister and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s Amama Mbabazi, according to information from the Kiggundu Electoral Commission.

The returns are only from 0.02% of polling stations and are statistically negligible.

Obasanjo who is also Nigeria’s former president Thursday said: “Today is an opportunity for the people to exercise their democratic right and express their will through the ballot box. It is vitally important that all stakeholders respect the franchise and refrain from acts of violence and intimidation.”

“As Commonwealth observers, our role is to consider whether the election has been conducted credibly and transparently. We are looking not only at election day, but the whole electoral process, and whether it is compliant with both Ugandan’s laws and the international and regional standards to which the country has committed,” Obasanjo said.

He assured Ugandans that the Commonwealth’s assessment and report will accurately reflect the group’s observations, insisting that all observers must “say it as you see it”. He added: “We are all men and women of integrity and I do not believe any of us would want to sacrifice his or her integrity on the alter of unnecessary convenience.”
