UNHCR Statement on the death of two Burundian refugees

UNHCR was saddened to learn the death of two Burundian refugees who were shot and killed by the border control authorities early this morning while attempting to cross the border with Tanzania near Mahama camp. We express our sincere condolences to their families.

Preliminary information shared by the authorities mentions that the two refugees were allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

The loss of refugee lives is regrettable and UNHCR urges the authorities to conduct a full investigation into this tragic incident.

UNHCR stands by the side of the refugee community in Mahama camp and is working closely with the camp managers and community leaders to maintain calm and provide the necessary psychosocial support while waiting for the results of the government investigation.
